Congress of the People (COPE) in the Northern Cape is pleased with the performance of all the Independent Candidates and the outcomes of the bi – elections held on 13 February 2019 in Sol Plaatje municipality. Although COPE did not contest directly, we fully supported all Independent Candidates in all material respects and this strategy worked extremely well for now and into the future.
The ANC is the biggest loser. Their majority has been significantly reduced in all the contested wards, including losing one ward. The beast has been nicely tamed in it’s own former stronghold. Moreover, there was a large voter stay away which showed a lack of confidence in them. Things will never be the same again for the party of corruption in those wards and elsewhere.
We salute the courage of the independent candidates to follow their convictions and stand for what is right. They understood that it is not in the interest of a competitive democracy to have power concentrated in any one political party. Although most lost, they can walk tall that they loosened the shackles of undemocratic servitude to a corrupt ruling elite clique
The current ruling party has become arrogant and ride roughshod over accountability and transparency simply because of their dominance. Corruption and bad governance has gone out of control because of this untenable situation.
It was a case of David versus Goliath. They again misused and abused state resources as a show of power to intimidate their opponents. State employees, EPWP workers, state hired cars and food parcels were extensively used. Even building new shacks for people as a form of vote buying. However, this abuse failed to give them the absolute majority they desperately wanted.
COPE is full of confidence that Galeshewe, where they’ve been dominant for a long time, has turned the corner and is now ready for a big change on 8 May 2019.
